GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE

C-15

Tracy Young

ing in 1991, it became her career in 1998 when she moved to Miami's South Beach, home of almost everything gay in Florida. Once there, she started spinning at Liquid, one of the hottest nightclubs in the country.

Since starting there, she has remixed songs for the Pet Shop Boys and Enrique Eglesias, and has become the first woman to remix tracks for Madonna, including the smash hit "Music." Madonna was so enchanted with her that Young played at the Material Girl's parties for the debut of The Next Best Thing; New Year's Eve; and even Madonna's wedding to director Guy Ritchie.

In addition to being one of the few really famous female DJs, Young is one of the even fewer lesbian DJs making a name for herself.

Inside My Head is a prime example of Young's trance style. Trance is more laid back, still with the danceable beat but not as spastic as the dance music you usually hear at gay clubs. It's often what is playing in movies when characters are at a rave, with repetitions of themes blending into one another to create a continuum of sound.

Young also contributed the "Tonight" disk to the Winter Party 4 release, which benefits the Dade Human Rights Foundation and was released on gay dance label Centaur. Her work on this album is more high-energy than her solo CD, most likely because it mirrors the set she played at the Winter Party in South Beach. It's good stuff, but not for those who can't dance unless it's "Believe" by Cher.

John Blair Party Vol. 4

DJ James Anderson

Logic Records/BMG

Here's an odd one: a DJ that used to play violin with the Wisconsin Symphony. Hmm-m.

James Anderson is that enigma. His musical tastes range from Motown to New Wave, but his style on the turntables is pure dance.

Anderson has been associated with Junior Vasquez, the aforementioned fairy godfather of house music, as well as having been one of New York's leading hairstyl ists, personal stylist for a while to the Divine Miss M.

The energy levels on Anderson's mixes go through the roof. Fairly simple beats are overlaid with single-word vocal samples. Caribbean-themed rhythms and other effects to produce a tide of sound that is sure to make you want to move your back side to the beat. Anderson was also the featured DJ on John Blair Party Vol. 2. Between the two volumes, it's easy to see why Anderson is one of the hottest circuit DJs in North America.
